How To Create Impact with Subtle Layering | Inspired By A Card With Nathalie (With Video Tutorial!)

Hi there!  It's Nathalie here with a new idea on how to create impact with subtle layering in your projects featuring the beautiful Build-A-Garden: Tranquil Trail.   This new set is so versatile that can easily be used in many different projects with varied finishing looks.    This time, I am focusing on using it to add impact on a traveler's notebook spread through delicate and simple layering.

Let's take a look at today's project:

This project showcases how easily you can create dimension without adding bulk in your projects.   The key is to create interest in each of the layers so that they all -collectively- bring your main/focus subject forward.  Let's take a closer look at the spread:

Start With a Solid Background

In order to make my photos (the subject of this spread) shine in the spread, I am using Crafty Necessities: Dew Drops Cardstock as the base.  The solid and saturated color in the background matches the one in the photo therefore makes the subject of the photo pop.   Lots of negative space -in this case a solid color with no print- works as the blank space and anchor for the spread.

Use A Framing Layer

A simple way to create impact with subtle layering in any project is by adding a framing layer.  I am using pieces of color vellum cut smaller than my bases as a way to create separation from the background, and also a means to frame the layout's photos.

Add Subtle Interest in Each Layer

Since I am using vellum to create one of my layers, and due to its translucency, it was my choice to add subtle details to it so that it will not disappear on the spread.   This time I am using the branch image of the Build-A-Garden: Tranquil Trail to add a simple embossed impression to the vellum.  For this, I am using Clear Embossing Ink and Clear Crystal Embossing Powder as they will form a raised image of the stamped image in the vellum.   In addition, I am partially adhering the vellum to the page, so that the edges of the vellum remain free and loose on the spread.

Add Flow to Your Layering

The curvature of the flowering branch in the Build-A-Garden Tranquil Trail is the perfect way to bring movement and flow to the spread.  Staying within the color choices of the background helps to keep the spread cohesive but also help to create impact with subtle layering in color.   I am using  Mint Choc and Pool from the Aqua Island Fresh Dye Ink set to color the blooms in the branches, and Misty Sage and Green Opal from the Jade Dreams Fresh Dye Ink set to color the stems and leaves in the branches, along with the Golden Honeycomb marker from the Cottage Garden Artist Marker set to color the center of the blooms.

Due to the size of my spread, I am opting for cutting apart one of the branches.  Then using some of the pieces to bulk and elongate the other branch -so that it frames the photo-, and the rest to help and continue the design throughout the next page.

Small Finishing Touches

The last step to create impact with subtle layering in this spread is all in finishing details.   I am opting for a simple title -that follows the shape and text format of the photos – using the One-Go: Sentiments 2 Press Plate, some drops of Pure White Ink Spray and a few sequins.
